Template Design
Client: Yota Dimitri, Reading Old Cemetery
Reading Old Cemetery contacted the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication, University of Reading, with various design deliverables in mind for the historical cemetery based in Reading, Berkshire.
The project’s primary aims were to design a range of informational and promotional items for Reading Old Cemetery, to not only commemorate people buried on the ground, but to also help strike interest amongst a wide range of age groups/audiences, encouraging people to visit the historic landmark to explore and discover the cemetery grounds.
I worked in a small team of three, with other designers from the department, focusing on designing the ‘Grave of the Month’ template and 'typeface document' guidelines, alongside team leading, overlooking the entire creative direction of the project and communicating with the client.
Grave of the Month was an A5 editable template design that could be used in Canva as per client’s request. Some of the key design requests were to:
- keep colours to a minimum, ideally beiges
- have gothic Victorian yet modern and clean feel to it
- ensure that there is enough space for an image and text that can be featured with each month
- ensure the design was single sided
One of the main challenge to solve during this project was to make sure that everyone’s individual deliverables (cemetery map and tours/guides template) from the team looked cohesive with each other, in regards with the style of illustrations, typography etc, which was solved by creating an in-depth guideline that assisted us in staying consistent throughout.
Some printing options that were considered for this deliverable were:
- 250-350gsm silk stock, to give the design slight shine and vibrancy alongside strength
- 170gsm bond stock
